API data sharing

Data sharing is when your healthcare providers or health insurance plans send and receive your healthcare data between them.

Examples of healthcare data include your medical records (like lab results, medications, and allergies), claims history (like past doctor visits and procedures you’ve had), and prior authorization records.

One way we can share data is using a special system called an Application Programming Interface (API). Whether or not we share your healthcare data using APIs is up to you. You can choose to opt in or out at any time.

What are the benefits of API data sharing?

Usually, healthcare providers and health insurance plans can’t see any of your healthcare data from other providers or plans — and that can affect the care you get.

API data sharing can help provide a better overall healthcare experience, including:

  • Better care coordination and care outcomes
  • Better continuity of care and fewer care disruptions
  • Easier prior authorization processes and more timely care
  • More complete medical records available to all your health plans and providers

What are the risks?

Devoted has privacy and security measures in place to protect your healthcare data — but there are always some risks with any type of data sharing. For details, see our Notice of Privacy Practices.

What are the types of API data sharing?

Provider access API

This is when Devoted helps your providers share your healthcare data with each other. It only includes in-network providers who are in our records as having cared for you.

By default, you’re opted in to provider access API. You can opt out at any time.

Payer-to-payer API

This is when your different health plans share healthcare data with each other. It only includes plans that you’ve enrolled with (including past, present, or future enrollment).

When you opt in, you tell us about your past health plans and any other current health plans.

  • For past plans, we ask them to share up to 5 years of healthcare data, and we add it to your new Devoted records.
  • For other current plans, we exchange healthcare data with them at least every 3 months so we can best coordinate your coverage and care.

By default, you’re opted out of payer-to-payer API. You can opt in at any time.
